Continuing the figure of "unrequited love", idealization plays a role - a simple misperception or distortion of what the state of affairs actually is. It's no coincidence that a "romance" used to refer to fantasy tales of adventure, like Treasure Island. OTOH some seemingly impossible things couldn't have happened without a "vision".
