I was under the impression that, if a modern-ish civilization existed in the near-geological-past, we'd be able to tell by a complete lack low-energy easy-to-acquire resources. Like, anything easy to dig up, would have been, dug up, made into machines, and then dispersed as low density material ( where-ever it ended up as the society decayed )
