In fact the average person living within colonial territories experienced a marked decline in freedom and liberty at the end of colonial rule. There are exceptions such as Singapore. But typically corrupt politicians with little regard for the welfare of their people came into power. In many cases these politicians were overthrown in turn by even worse military rulers. Examples include Algeria, Congo, Egypt, Madagascar, Indonesia, and many others.
