i don't think it's a GUI for "dd", at least it works way faster than "dd" for all the cards I've tried.

You’re most likely using dd wrong then. Perhaps an incorrect block size or not writing to the raw device (e.g on Mac, that would be /dev/rdisk1).

That said, the fact that Etcher doesn’t require you to know this is a plus.
