In big German cities, an average developer only makes 20% more than an average employee. In the last city where I lived in Germany:

Average salary for developers: 2950 euro per month after tax

Average across all jobs: 2450 euro per month after tax

Don't forget, unlike other jobs, developers have to waste their evenings, weekends and vacations to learn new technologies and you will not even be paid fair for that sacrifice.

Average in a (big) city is skewed by other office jobs. Developers are not the only white collars in town..

You can read tech article at work. Not mandatory to work at home to learn new tech, and if you do, it's up to you to be paid for it: change job to match your news skills.

I don’t think the experience you describe is universal. Plenty of developers have both reasonable work-life balance and fair compensation (I think?).
