There are so many smart people in transportation research and development. They've developed solar energy harvesting concrete for heaven's sake. But when will we see such improvements? I think when our transportation problems get much worse than they are now. Now, it's just "ok". Sure we have slow trains and broken bridges, but on the whole, people can get around the USA. It needs to get much much worse.
