This is what happens with xenophobia, nationalistic vaccines, politicization of vaccines with conspiracy theories, lack of international coordination, vaccinations optional, and slow/unequal vaccine deployment.
The response to the pandemic is much worse than the disease itself. It was easy to see that a mass freakout was the goal from the beginning. There's a video floating around twitter with a million views, I don't know the backstory of the guy... Supposedly from Spring 2020. Transcript, link at the bottom:
