It can work for software because you have no unit costs but it doesn't work for hardware or any other physical items because people's price expectations are far below actual costs. You also need to ask for 4x-10x as much money as you think you need. Keep in mind that real investors expect you to pivot but Kickstarter backers will be angry and demand refunds.
