Well, it’s easy to see the result. There are plenty of countries with high unemployment (especially among youth). Take Greece for example. Their economy isn’t doing so great relative to a country with high employment - Canada, USA, Germany, France, UK. Work hard if you want to have the highest standard of living.

More toys. Everybody must have more toys. Work hard and have more toys, even if you won't have enough time to play with them.

The Greeks work the longest hours in the EU. A lot of it is back breaking agricultural work.

Highest material standard of living perhaps, not so sure about quality of life in general.

I think working hard only makes sense if you're adequately compensated and have prospects of career growth. Otherwise doing the bare minimum is the rational thing to do.
