It doesn’t really motivate, it’s a feeble attempt to boost motivation via extrinsic motivation. Unfortunately (or fortunately), extrinsic motivation doesn’t work long term, doesn’t work if the extrinsic motivation stops, and most importantly, kills intrinsic motivation.
