One example taken directly from my life is that the exterior of older buildings offer dramatically more shelter from the elements to both passerby and the homeless. Modern buildings will rarely have doorways or awnings to shelter in. And when they do they are often built to a gigantic scale that is drafty and relatively exposed. Nooks and crannies vs 90 degrees of flat concrete. Brick, wood, stone vs stainless steel and glass. Window sills with moulding you can sit on. That's warm because its made of wood. Which buildings look closer to a prison? |
