Buy UPF shirts from Patagonia, a relatively environmentally-friendly company. I never go out in the summer without UPF-50 long sleeve shirts, never have an issue with tanning let alone burning, and always feel perfectly comfortable as I don't have to apply or remove as much sunscreen.
Hats are good, as is sun-protective clothing in general. There are a number of companies providing some kind of ultra-thin sun-protective hoodie which is surprisingly comfortable to wear even in hot temperatures. I have a few echo hoodies from outdoor research.
Unless you are a field worker, fisherman, truck driver or some other similar professions, I think you can ignore the sunscreen. You are very rarely forced to be exposed to the harshest sun for prolonged periods of time.
