The original pet v cattle metaphor was indeed inspired by servers, not containers. http://cloudscaling.com/blog/cloud-computing/the-history-of-... What makes a given component – server, vm, container, whatever – is not the runtime, but how you deal with it when it gets seriously ill. Pets are taken to the vet or hospital to get treatment.
