Yeah, but we do have an awful lot of middle managers, who know very little about software.

Consider e.g., https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_current_Premier_League... except for one or two, all managers are former players. Why? We all know something about that industry at large.

My theory is that when you are competing on equal terms you cannot afford managers that are not part of the game.
