Not related to the article, but I feel like as active engineers we own it to ourselves to always be preparing for the next play. I recently started doing more interview prep even though I'm not unsatisfied with my position. And I even took a few phone screens just for entertaining the idea and testing the water.

Gotta say it just feels nice to be able to go through a couple of those smoothly. I think that actually relieved some latent stress I've been having all this time and made me more at east even at work. Feels good to know that I'm ready when the time comes, even if not now.

A friend of mine does something like this to test the waters. This approach seems to help prepare to be prepared. But then he sometimes has to face the dilemma- whether to accept the next opportunity. :-)
I can't imagine doing this without actively thinking about leaving my current job for whatever company I'm interviewing with.

Which is maybe not a bad idea, say once or twice a year? Even a loyal and supportive manager has certainly run the numbers on life with or without you on the team, and will be told to do so again at some point.

I've learned a lot from asking questions at interviews. My approach is to ask as many questions as them.
Out of interest, what do you ask?
Anything comes to mind i find interesting, especially tech things. I try for knowing their stack and internals and methodology well by the time i,m leaving.
