I saw this plane while watching The Wind Rises and due to the unorthodox wing design I assumed it was never built in reality.

Pleasantly surprised to know that it actually existed, even if it was not a viable aircraft.

I do not see any mention about this. It seems there was an issue during a test, the prototype was broken and there were no funds to resume testing.

Maybe someone that is knowledgeable and passionate enough could plug this design into an airplane simulator and determine it's merits.
