I think an apt analogy is Google Glass. It went without saying they didn't invent surreptitious video recording. This didn't prevent _overwhelming outcry_ over legitimate privacy concerns. The only difference I can see here is Apple's halo effect. Possible action items: - I will happily submit my Android location data to Apple to find out if I'm being tracked by an AirTag. Where's the API? (I realize this compromises the "theft prevention" use case. That's an unfortunate collision of interests. Maybe sell a Pro version, comparable to LoJack. If I understood correctly, "3 days since home" is too much window anyway.)
- Let me use an iPhone with Find My disabled to receive stalker alerts, without participating in the mesh (read: sending the tag's location). Can someone confirm whether this is already how it works? As I see it, these are table stakes. The optics are not my problem: you're selling a $30 private investigator with no legal oversight. Doubt me? Volunteer at a women's shelter. |

No need. Your android device can already pick up the airtag beacons. Google (perhaps with Apples help) _need_ to get safety alerts working cross platform ASAP. Someone and likely many people are going to be hurt by this tech so this needs to be done, and hopefully before regulators kill the whole idea of tracker tags.
