Here's my take on it: If there were a software hack / method to make reading faster AND have the reader retain the information, THEN readers like Kindle and Books on iOS would have it. (Apple even adopted Night Shift on a vague theory that it might perhaps help some people sometimes..)

Also IMHO the slowness of reading is not a bug, it's a key feature. It's supposed to be slow. That's why audiobooks can't compare. They just exist because we are a generation of hyper-distracted fear-driven overworked .. crazy people. ;)
