Chia team anticipates an S curve where adoption will level off and at that point it'll mostly be companies or people that have extra storage laying around and figure 'why not' store some plots on these disks to try to earn a bit of money. Or orgs plotting to new servers while they're waiting to be used, deleting plots as the storage is needed. They also argue it's more green because if you don't want to store the plots, you delete them and the storage is still available as normal storage for other purposes. With PoW, you have specialized hardware that isn't useful for other purposes and you burn a lot of electricity all the time securing the network. |
