One one hand the whole enterprise was doomed to fail. How do you go about determining if the Linux kernel maintainers are susceptible to accepting bad patches? It’s such an important project how does one A/B test like that?

But then for UMN to not even take the steps to try and even get Linus’s blessing or figure out a way to do this but do so anyway for the past year or so is rather damning. That there is a possibility of redemption is an olive branch to the faculty and students that I don’t think needed to be granted. Greg KH is a better man than I am for I would have issued a lifetime ban to the university and that likely would have tarnished it and the students involved and the faculty as well. The reputational damage alone would be devastating.
