Understandable you'd think Kinder was a German brand, but they're made by Ferrero, an Italian company.

Ah, I keep forgetting that. "Kinder" sounds very German to me.
Because the word is german indeed.

Ferrero has an long history in using foreign words in their product names.

E.g.

Mon Cheri chocolate in 1956

Nutella in 1964 ("nut" also not an italian word, which would be "nocciola")

It is, German for "Child" (cfr. Kindergarten)
Actually, it's German for "children".
