Sure, but if you can run through billions of possible hashes per second then it's possible to brute force the "one way" hash by exploring hashes for short passwords. 1 billion passwords per second is 86 trillion passwords per day. If a hacker wanted to gain access to a particular password then it can become trivial to crack with fairly modest resources. The only thing that protects you is a sufficiently complex and long password. |
