I've only two comments. Why the hell aren't our governments doing considerably more to protect us users from these miserable corporate carpetbaggers?

And second, I find it very hard to believe that backups don't exist, especially so in circumstances such as this case. (Even Blind Freddy would know that failing to do backups in these circumstances would ultimately have major consequences for Google—either from legal action brought on by aggrieved users and or legislative changes that will result in negative outcomes for Google.)
