Do you mean due to the thickness of each connection, they would occupy too much space if the number of dimensions was too high? Not necessarily 4 or more, just very high because there are on the order of n^2 connections for n neurons? In the visual cortex, neurons are arranged in layers of 2D sheets, so that perhaps gives an extra dimension to fit connections between layers. |
