Algebraically manipulating stuff (factoring, rearranging, cancelling, expanding, simplifying, etc.) without the terseness of math notation sounds like a nightmare, regardless of whether I'm using a chalkboard or an endless sheet of paper.

Yes, because code is used in very different ways to a mathematical expression. When you see code in a repository or a textbook, I doubt you find yourself copying it out over and over again in your own work.
