Having a daily team meeting for mostly unnecessary purposes sounds awful. I admittedly don't primarily do development and don't have daily standups anyway. Once a week team meetings at mutually convenient time--I work across multiple timezones--that can spend some time on what people are up to outside of work are fine. But that's about the limit.

They're daily for the reason that if they're not unnecessary, it's possible to react quickly to obstacles.

In the ideal case, if everyone just says "yep, still working on that feature, I see no obstacles, next", standups can last 3 minutes.

In the case where someone says "I'm blocked by a PR by Geoff from Team B" for 2 days straight, the team knows to step in.

Yup this makes sense. Also to the original comment, our approach is not for everyone. It definitely skews extroverted.
