Here in Switzerland, there are tons and tons of measure points, and in my experience, the resulting predictions are fantastically accurate.

For example, here is one of the measurement stations in Zurich:

This is outside of the city center (to minimize effects such as radiant heat due to pavements etc.), so it gives a good base value to compare against.

I've managed to get home in the dry by seeing the predicted movement of the rain on the radar and going home where (time-wise) there's a gap between 2 blue patches...
