This sounds very similar to how I use org-mode these days; lots of capturing (from e-mails, code, web pages, chats, anywhere), clocking and note-taking, maybe some quick calculations or sql's using babel, timesheets for end of month billing, agenda/calendar views and reminders …

But when I was in university, I used it mainly for note-taking on lectures, reading lists, ideas, and for writing articles and such (exporting to LaTeX). Considering the amount of things I've found it useful for, learning it has certainly paid off :-)
