I always thought 'nightclub' vs 'club' was that the nightclub had VIP rooms, and nearly naked ladies dancing around, and £10 lap dances.

I've never heard that described as a nightclub; that would be a gentlemen's club (once again, multiple meanings) or a strip club.

In the Philippines, a "club" is a strip club. What I would call a club is known as a "disco" there
