I wouldn't say that's super likely. Given that you haven't worked as a professional software engineer for ~10 years. There's more to being a senior engineer than being able to do challenging programming problems. Not to discourage you, but getting to £100k as a SWE in the UK is tricky, outside of finance. Even more so with 3-5 years of experience. That being said, it sounds like finance would be a good fit for you?

I understand software engineering requires more than solving programming problems. Honestly I am not worried about this because I have developed good people skills and have experience managing people and projects. I have interviewed and hired people...when looking at underlying principals, professions share commonality in terms of work practises. If one is capable, it should not be a problem to move between fields following an adjustment period. If one has a rigid mindset and learns by rote, then it would be a problem. I also have a good understanding of business models, marketing, budgets, accounting which is helpful in any context but particularly software engineering where many professionals may not be as well versed or as motivated to understand these things.

Yes I dont have to earn £100k as a SWE to be happy. I know people who work in finance as SWE earning easily more than £100k and will soon be remote. Given I have a good understanding of the business side of finance, I think I would make a good programmer in this area.
