How would one tumble in the avalanche while in the tent? Is the thought that the group heard the avalanche, came out, and got caught in it?

I should read the paper more carefully. I'm going off what I remember from Dead Mountain by Eichar.

The article says, perhaps that was a small & solid slab of packed snow that fell on the tent, broke some bones, and slid away.
