I sometimes wonder if these people never actually worked in high level programming and just 'think' it's probably the same.

i pretty much exclusively work in high level languages - it is the same. people just think it's different because they like being "closer to the computer" which isn't a real thing but instead a mental block.

i feel plenty close to the computer pretty much constantly no matter my level of abstraction.
