I followed your link and it said the reason the picture of Lenna (from a 1972 edition of Playboy) became significant was for its first use in 1973 in an academic conference paper on image processing.

Yet it also states that Woody Allen also used the image in the film Sleepers in the same year.

Woody Allen hardly got the idea from reading academic conference literature.

Makes me think that the image must have made an enormous impact on its release in 1972. Makes you wonder what was cropped, although her face is very nice
