This reminds me of the concept of "karuna" in Bhuddism. To me what the author is discussing is the difference between the direction translation of the word, often taken as "compassion" vs. the intention to seek truth and deeply act upon it. What Jay Garfield (Smith College) referred to as "sloppy sympathy" is what I think the author here is referring to as moral incompetence. |
