High carbon steel is only a percent or two carbon. You could easily source that from renewables if that was the bulk of the carbon equation. I’ve heard it said from a couple of sources that ironworks were a major contributor to deforestation in Europe prior to the development of coal-fired smelting, which has a sulfur problem in addition to carbon and oxygen. |
