Is this company publicly traded? I've never heard of this company before.

If the theory is that everybody is just waiting for e-ink patents to expire to open up the market, wouldn't it be a bad idea to invest in the company holding those patents?

They've been around for a while. They ran successful crowdfunding campaigns for several generations of their previous 13" e-ink monitors (https://www.indiegogo.com/individuals/13653865/campaigns) and a Kickstarter for their e-ink tablet.
