Ignorantia juris non excusat. (Note to downvoter(s): this is a genuine counterpoint to mens rea. You can break a criminal law with a clear conscience, yet still be convicted, when the reason you had a clear conscience is that you didn't know it was illegal. It's a fine distinction.) |
