Go low level. Get back to basics - abandon higher level abstractions (thinking bloated and depressing frameworks). Implement a project that interests you, purely for fun.

I like this! have been thinking about FPGAs and how much fun I had learning them! AU and flip-flops might be a little lower than what you meant tho :-)

Pick up a retrocomputer and try to do something useful with it, there's a lot of unwarranted excitement to have and it's fairly cheap.
