When Google published PageRank in 1998, they didn't publish MapReduce, the framework required to do coordinate large distributed computations, until 2004. By then, AltaVista was dead. If AltaVista had thrown resources at the problem using any of the then widely known techniques for scaling, they would have been constantly dead in the water. |
