Unpopular opinion: The abstract mathematics side of PL research is progressing good enough. More important thing is to improve tooling, and it matters we should be able to design efficient and ergonomic programming languages with tooling focus in mind. Maybe hardcore Set theory people don't accept progresses in Zig or Rust as PL research, but they are very important thing as well. |

Do you have something specific in mind? IDEs? I don't know much about this but I presume work is being done on Rust/Zig IDEs.
