Ask HN: Linux tiling manager still works well on a large monitor?
3 points by Takizawamura 2017 days ago
I get the appeal of using a tiling manager like i3 on a linux laptop. My question is, are tiling managers still useful if you are working from a desktop with a large monitor, such as a 34" ultrawide?

Anyone have experience using tiling managers on a large monitor?

I currently use sway on a 35" WQHD and a 14" notebook and IMO tiling window managers are actually more useful on large monitors.

On small screens I often have programs in basically fullscreen, because of the limited space. But the bigger the screen the better you can actually tile it beyond simple half/quarter splits.

I use i3 on dual 27” and it works well. Mostly do 2-3 windows split vertically on each.
I have used xmonad exclusively for 6 years and have been very happy on larger (or multiple larger) monitors.

I have a strong dislike of desktop environments though.

I would think that the bigger the monitor, the greater their advantage.
