Yes and one of the old fashioned way to increase your network is– cold calling.

You’ve probably heard the saying that if you don’t ask you don’t get, and this is very true. If you are out of options, regarding building a relationship or just meeting the right person in the right organization, then you can try the phone, email usually does not work.

I've never had luck with cold calling. Cold email has worked a few times, but I've always had to craft my email pretty intensely. Aim was to show I wasn't a drive by emailer, but that I'd actually done some work around something the recipient was interested in.
