Is the term "parenthetical" not common in the UK?

The alternative would be bracketed, I suppose, so it is common.
Wouldn't it just be "in brackets"?

I used to hear that quite often - not so much in recent years, if I think about it, but that may be by chance. I think it is what I would say.
