There's a bias because of the vast majority of people in the service industry that receive less tips from Black customers.

It may not be right, but this is why it happens. I know tons of people in the restaurant industry and it's not just a stereotype.

There should be a discussion here on why tipping your server is important, but instead, we blame the server..and the situation is never resolved. It's typical thinking of our times: it's always someone else's fault.

Regardless of the reason, this article even provides some evidence that it's true.

"Servers are thus thought to be economically motivated to give preferential service to white customers who they believe are more likely to reward their efforts."

Servers rely on tips to earn a living. If the vast majority of the time they receive no tips/really low tips from a specific group of people, it's only natural that they put less effort into serving that group of customers.
