one of the biggest reasons Apple would switch to ARM for laptop-like products is to reduce their dependence on Intel's effective monopoly!

Well, they could certainly switch using intel ARM chips. Eases the transition (maybe?) and once everything is on ARM they can switch to another manufacturer anytime.
