I doubt it's just a phase. Pop and hip-hop with mostly electronic instruments are by far the most popular genre. I can't even remember the last Top 40 rock hit in the US, which is a big contrast to the 90s and early 00s.

Just as jazz had a peak in popularity but never really went away, I think rock is now in a similar position.

As a guitar player i admit that guitar is totally under represented in the pop scene of the last 10 years, gigs and studio work dropped also for us unknown musicians. Just for the record, very few top 20 songs on Spotify from the last years feature real guitars at all. Every period has its instruments.
