I wish the USA had laws mandating the usability of IoT hardware like this. Something like “right to repair,” but perhaps more aggressive.

They should just have to buy back the hardware if they don’t support it anymore, for some reasonable time frame of support (10 years?)

I was impressed by how aggressively pro-consumer they were with that shutdown. To the point I would trust them more than other orgs with similar products

It would be good if a certification organization or insurance company would validate IoT hardware, saying "this will be supported with these features at this price point for at least N years, or will refund you the original purchase price of the hardware." The certification organization would bear the liability for this, so they would make sure they had watertight contracts with the manufacturers, and would collect risk premiums or collateral in case the manufacturer went insolvent.
