I am not sure that there is any one path or unique suggestion. But my general advice was to stay curious, learn as much as possible and keep an eye for what could be, rather than just accepting things as they are. Also I strongly believe in the cross pollination of concepts leading to unique ideas. So having some sort of orthogonal knowledge in addition to medicine is helpful (e.g. business, chemistry, biology, programming, etc).
