I like this, mostly for the OS LAN Video conferencing system. The only one that comes to mind is VideoLAN VC but it seems to be deprecated since 2007.

The wireless part is really just wifi with big antennas. I'm sure you could get much more than 1km with dishes on both sides of the link - I've done 30km file transfers and Mumble chats that were still Part 15 FCC compliant.

Yes. We could have. But that would be point to point. We have done point to multipoint (thats why its called a hotspot). We had villages and remote areas in mind.
