I agree with your conclusion. However I think it’s a very serious fallacy to split surveillance into a ‘useful’ component and ‘side-effects’. They aren’t side-effects. They are the effects. Reduced crime may be a consequence of a surveillance society. In such a society you may discover that discussing crime statistics in a negative light would reflect badly on the party bosses and must be done with caution. |
